Justice of the Peace Pct. #2 Teen Court Information

Teen Court is a statutory peer accountability program for students between the ages of 10 and 17 (18 if still in high school) who receive complaints or citations. It is often used as a condition for deferred disposition. NOTE: Referral is not automatic: Defendants or their parents should request that the judge refer their case to Teen Court.

Participation in Teen Court is based on an admission of guilt, although defendants may enter a no contest plea on official court records. Trials are not for the purpose of determining guilt or innocence - trials are to establish appropriate community service sentences based on the circumstances of the offense.

There is a $10 court administrative fee and a $10 Teen Court fee for defendants to participate.

Participation is voluntary. Defendants may opt to terminate participation at any time prior to their Teen Court hearing and pay the fine assessed at the court hearing. Teen Court Administrators reserve the right to refuse participation from those who fail to abide by the terms of the Teen Court Agreement.

The Denton County Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 court refers Teen Court candidates to the Little Elm or The Colony Teen Court programs. The Teen Court hearings are heard in the respective municipal court courtroom. Each program is staffed by the following:

  1. Adult Teen Court Coordinator

  2. Guest Judge

  3. Teenaged Bailiffs

  4. Teenaged Prosecutor

  5. Teenaged Defense Counsel

  6. Teenaged Jury

Teen defendants are prosecuted by a teenaged "prosecutor", have teenaged "defense counsel" and are sentenced by a teenaged jury.

If you would like to participate as a volunteer juror or attorney, contact the respective municipal court for more information.
