Copper Canyon Road Construction Status

As of June 1st, 2010

COPPER CANYON ROAD (NORTH SECTION FROM HICKORY HILL TO OLD ALTON BRIDGE)

The improvements to Copper Canyon Road include removing the existing 20-foot asphalt road and constructing a 24-foot wide concrete roadway.  They also include removing a very dangerous hairpin curve, smoothing out other curves, raising the roadway in the floodplain, improving the drainage throughout the project, and pavement striping.

Copper Canyon North project limits are from Copper Canyon /Hickory Hill Road intersection to the south end of the Old Alton Road Bridge.  The construction of Copper Canyon Road has been divided into four phases.

·         The first phase is from Hickory Hill Road to the old hairpin curve.

·         The second phase goes from the beginning of the south side of the old hairpin curve over the old Foster property ending at the north end of the hairpin curve.

·         The third phase goes from the north end of the old hairpin curve to Old Alton Road.

·         The final phase, Phase IV, goes from Old Alton Road to the south end of the Old Alton Road Bridge.

The contractor has completed Phases I and II and is currently on schedule to be complete Phase III by the beginning of June.  Phase IV will begin on approximately June 7th.  Construction for this section will be complete by mid August, and by the end of August all construction is scheduled to be complete.

This section is being constructed during the summer since the majority of students are out of school and there is less activity along the roadway.  The intent is to have the road complete prior to the beginning of school in the fall.

Construction of Phase IV Copper Canyon Road will require the roadway to be closed from FM 2181 to Hickory Hill Road.  The detour for this section will go from FM 2181, Hickory Creek Road, FM 1830, Hickory Hill Road, and ending at Copper Canyon Road (approximately a 7-mile detour).    See map below.

 Design Work

  • TNP continues on the design of Copper Canyon Road from FM 407 to the east end of the newly constructed Hickory Hill Road.

  • TNP has been working with the Town of Copper Canyon and the Lantana Development to ensure that the design of Copper Canyon Road will work with future development, intersecting roads, and other design projects within the area.

  • TNP has broken the project into three phases for design efforts. Phase I goes from FM 407 to just north of Poindexter Branch, Phase Two goes from Phase I to just south of the Copper Canyon Rd/Hickory Hill intersection, and Phase III goes from Phase II to the newly constructed portion of Hickory Hill Road (just east of Loving Branch). TNP is approximately 80% complete with the design of Phase I, and approximately 80% complete with Phase II, and approximately 50% complete with phase III.

  • Once the design has reached 60% for all three phases TNP will begin preparing ROW documents for the properties in which ROW is needed. At this time the only properties that we anticipate ROW purchase on is from Lantana, Buttons, and Ward (the S-curves near FM 407).

  • Revised plans will be sent to utility companies as soon as we get to the 60% stage. We anticipate 60% plans to be ready by the middle of December 2009.

  • TNP anticipates many utility relocations associated with this project due to the widening of the road and the proposed drainage facilities. Utility companies should anticipate these relocations and start preparing funds for these relocations.

  • Our current schedule is to have construction start in spring of 2010.
