Denton County Justices of the Peace

 

Our Mission:

Justices of the Peace have jurisdiction in Criminal and Civil matter.

The Justice of the Peace's Civil function is to hold both justice and small claims court judiciously and as quickly as possible.

The criminal jurisdiction of the court includes Class C Misdemeanor cases such as bad checks, truancy, traffic offenses, and Parks and Wildlife violations. The Justice of the Peace Court in Texas also performs magisterial duties such as accepting criminal complaints, ordering arrests, and issuing search warrants.

Justices of the Peace also perform wedding ceremonies.

PLEASE NOTE WHEN CONTACTING A COURT

"A judge shall not initiate, permit, or consider ex parte or other communications made to the judge outside the presence of the parties....concerning the merits of a pending or impending judicial proceeding. A judge shall require compliance with this subsection by court personnel subject to his or her direction and control..."
