Operations Support Unit

Volunteers for a Safer Denton County

Operations Support Unit (OSU) Deputies are licensed Texas Peace Officers commissioned by the Sheriff to provide cost-effective professional law enforcement and crime prevention for the citizens of Denton County. OSU Deputies serve primarily as lead or second officers in street and lake patrol, and warrant service/fugitive apprehension, but also in criminal investigations, Crime Stoppers, extradition/transport, special events, SWAT, mental health, bailiffs, and on inter-agency task forces.

OSU Deputies serve 24 hours, the equivalent of three shifts per month, in addition to training and meetings, but most greatly exceed that minimum requirement. As volunteers, the Unit provides Denton County with over $200,000 in annual personnel savings, along with considerable fees and restitutions generated through active criminal warrant service.

The OSU is completely supported through the Sheriff’s Office operating budget, which provides equipment, supplies, uniforms, body armor, ammunition, training and vehicle maintenance. The Unit has five fully equipped marked units for patrol, and four unmarked vehicles used for warrant service/fugitive apprehension, investigations and special operations. OSU Deputies are provided uniforms, outerwear, body armor, portable radios, TASERs, mobile computers, AR-15 rifles and other standard law enforcement items.

OSU Deputies represent a broad cross section of the community, having occupations, professions and backgrounds in business, commerce, education, government, industry and law enforcement. The common denominator is a sincere desire, commitment and time to serve the Denton County Sheriff’s Office and community as uncompensated law enforcement professionals.
