Procedures

Candidate Selection Process

Applications are screened by Human Resources based on the minimum requirements for the position(s) for which the applicant has applied. Qualified applicants are referred to the appropriate departments. Notification will be sent to applicants regarding the status of the position(s) for which they have applied. The hiring department determines which applicants will be interviewed.


Testing Procedures

DOT Testing Procedures

Denton County has a genuine interest in and concern for the safety and health of its employees. In support of this interest, the County complies with the Drug Free Workplace Act and the Department of Transportation's (DOT) Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act. Pre-employment drug testing is required.

Drug testing of employees who perform safety-sensitive functions and who are required to possess a Commercial Driver's License, must be tested if they:

Perform a safety-sensitive function as defined;

  • Hold a Commercial Driver License;
  • Drive vehicles over 26,001 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR);
  • Drive vehicles placarded by DOT under hazardous material regulations;
  • Drive vehicles designed to transport more than 16 passengers, including drivers.

Applicants for certain positions with Denton County must show evidence of a valid Texas Drivers License.

Applicants for certain position with Denton County must complete an Employee Release Form for DOT Report Form prior to hiring.

Testing Procedures for Law Enforcement positions

Law Enforcement candidates must complete an on-line application for each position for which they wish to apply, AND comply with the following conditions:

  • Be willing to work rotating shifts, holidays, overtime, nights, evenings and weekends as assigned.
  • Minimum age of 21 for Deputy Sheriff.
  • Minimum age of 18 for other positions in the department.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED or higher education.
  • Must not be under indictment for a felony offense
  • Must not have any Class A misdemeanor conviction or deferred adjudication
  • Must not have any Class B misdemeanor conviction or deferred adjudication within the past ten (10) years, nor be under indictment or on probation for a misdemeanor offense.
  • No military discharge under less than Honorable Conditions.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen for all law enforcement positions.

All law enforcement applicants are subject to background investigation, pre-employment drug testing, pre-employment physical, psychological examination, and/or polygraph examination.

Testing Procedures for Non-DOT and Non-Law Enforcement positions

Denton County is a Drug Free Workplace, and all Denton County positions are subject to pre-employment drug testing. Some Denton County positions may require State Criminal History background check, fingerprinting, and/or pre-employment physical.


General Employment Information

Age Requirements

Denton County requires its employees to be at least eighteen (18) years of age. The Deputy Sheriff position and several Juvenile Probation Services positions minimum age requirement is 21.

Denton County has no mandatory retirement age.

Length of Time Applications are left on File

All applications for employment remain on file as long as you have an active governmentjobs.com account. However, eligibility lists are only current for six (6) months. Any applicants who wish to receive further consideration for employment are required to submit a new application for the position(s) they are interested in.

Driver License Requirements

Several positions in the County do require proof of a Driver License as a part of the application process. If the position requires driving a County vehicle or heavy equipment a Driver License is required. A copy of the required type of Driver License ("C", "B" or "A") must be attached to the application when it is submitted to the Department of Human Resources.

Denton County provides public Kiosks for your application convenience. Kiosks are located in the Human Resources Department and in the Denton County Law Library. Community libraries and the Texas Workforce Commission also provide computers with internet access.

NOTE: For positions that require a typing test, you will be notified via email if you must complete a typing test. All typing test are administered in the Human Resources department. Email notifications will include the testing location and available times.
